There’s something wonderful about finding a sustainable, responsible and determined supplier on your doorstep – and that’s what has happened to Avanti with Bristol-based Grace & Green.

If ever a company really needed to exist to help tackle a problem, this is it.

More than 72% of the UK female population work – that’s more than 16 million people! The proportion who menstruate is significant, and so they have employers who really should sit up and listen on this issue.

While a lot of people talk about inclusivity, this is one aspect that is too often forgotten.

Sectors which need to take action include health and social care, wholesale and retail trade, and education. Which to us means every hospital, care home, shop and school at the very least ought to be providing free period products for staff and who need them.

Having periods really isn’t sustainable, is it?

In part, it’s about sustainability. Most period products are 90% plastic. It doesn’t take a genius to work out that this is a lot of plastic waste that we should be working to reduce, if at all possible. In the UK, the average person who menstruates is inadvertently responsible for the equivalent of 3876 plastic bags in terms of the volume of plastic waste – and there are toxin issues, too.

Grace & Green are the highest scoring B Corp within disposable period care in the world – their products are 100% certified organic, biodegradable, free from chlorine bleaches, pesticides and other synthetic materials and toxin-free.

The other problem is far more personal and human. And it comes down to dignity. According to Water Aid research, 85% of those who menstruate feel anxiety or stress about managing their period at work. Every month. Year in, year out, for many years.

While employers talk much about stress and honestly want to reduce negative forms, the reality is that most have never even thought about this particular source.

Time for Period Dignity in every workplace

Grace & Green are really taking on the mission for change. Their national Period Dignity scheme is supporting more than 400 employers, private and public, to provide sustainable period products and education.

Smarter cleaning choices that help cut carbon

Many of the Evans Vanodine products deliver a weighty sustainability dividend for our customers. Choosing these can make a real contribution to reducing the weight of water on the roads, and cutting their carbon footprint.

Did you know that road haulage represents a whopping 37% of the UK’s domestic transport carbon emissions?

HGVs account for 20% of that. They pour 21 million tonnes of carbon dioxide into the air each year. Vans account for the rest, emitting a further 18 million tonnes.

Reducing the need for road haulage is key to helping clean up the environment. Which means that transporting more products in the same vehicle capacity makes a huge difference.

Concentrating on the environment

Small wonder that cleaning chemical concentrates are increasingly popular domestically, as well as commercially.

For our business customers, the Evans e:dose range of super concentrates is a firm favourite. They are:

blissfully easy to store on site without taking up tons of space
simple to prepare - dosing caps make it easy to pour a single dose into a refillable spray bottle which can be topped up with tap water
easy to use correctly – colour-coded labels and liquids with coordinated spray bottles makes it crystal clear which product is for which purpose

These products are precisely dosed so there is also less wastage – this, plus the ease of storage make these a highly cost-efficient bulk purchase for facilities management and cleaning.

A 1 litre bottle of a concentrate can produce up to 100 spray bottles or 50 buckets of perfectly balanced cleaning solution – whether that’s for all-purpose cleaning, heavy duty hard surface cleaning, sanitising surfaces or degreasing them.

Savings as well as sustainability

Active Lifestyle Centres is a client to whom Avanti supplies cleaning and hygiene products across many of its leisure sites. By working with us to identify some smart swaps, the group has not just saved more than £25,000 annually but also trimmed its chemicals list from 50 to just 12 types across the company. Swapping to high concentrate sanitisers alone reduced the cost for these from £1160 to just £68 per year.

Evans walks the walk on sustainable cleaning

Evans takes its sustainability responsibilities to heart. It created the Evans GreenTick – its own kitemark and standard, which applies to the e:dose and many other ranges.

Double the capacity, half the hassle

Tork's new compressed hand towels are a game-changer for businesses looking for those small changes that add up to big business and environmental benefits.

These towels are 50% compressed, allowing dispensers to hold twice as many towels as before. Seeking out supplier sustainability: Helping Avanti customers join the circular economy by recycling paper hand towels

At Avanti, our mission is to create clean, safe, and sustainable spaces. One way we do this is by scrutinising supplier sustainability very carefully.

We always explore their green credentials in depth. It’s wonderful to find suppliers, who are truly walking the walk on sustainability – as well as providing us with products that are better for the planet.

We are delighted to highlight Essity, the company behind the ubiquitous washroom supplies brand Tork, as an exemplar of circularity.

We often don’t consider what happens next when we discard a hand towel after drying our hands in a washroom. Tork believes that we should – or, at least, that those who provide the washrooms themselves should!

World’s first washroom circularity programme - supplier sustainability in action!

The innovative Tork PaperCircle initiative is truly ground breaking. It is the first recycling service for paper hand towels.

Tork PaperCircle is designed to help businesses reduce waste and carbon footprint by collecting and recycling used paper hand towels into new tissue products.

This initiative not only promotes environmental responsibility but can help companies meet their sustainability targets.

According to Tork, a building with 800 people can potentially reduce emissions by a huge 190 kg of CO2 per month if they join this programme – that’s an estimated carbon footprint reduction of 40%.

The collection and recycling process is proven and reliable. They arrange collections, and transport the waste to Essity’s local mills. There, it can be processed and recycled into new products, ready to ship out to distributors and resellers like Avanti.

It not only reduces an area of waste that is usually unnoticed, but also closes the circular ‘loop’ so that less virgin wood fibre pulp is required for manufacturing.

We’re always excited when a new supplier joins us at Avanti, and even more so when their values align so closely with our own vision for sustainable cleaning and hygiene. We’ve been working with them for a while now, and their recycled washroom supplies are proving popular – for very good reason.

Lucart is breaking new ground when it comes to producing sustainable handtowels, loo rolls and other disposable paper products, because their raw material is a product most of us discard every day.

Saving hard-to-recycle materials from landfill to create recycled washroom supplies

If you’ve ever felt guilty about throwing away a milk carton or a juice carton because your local council – like many others – doesn’t collect them at the kerbside, you’ll be as pleased as we were to discover that someone is doing something about it.

Lucart gives new life to plasticised beverage cartons. It turns them into recycled washroom supplies, by separating out the cellulose fibres from other materials like aluminium and polyethylene. With those recovered materials, Lucart creates Fiberpak paper products, and the aluminium and polyethylene are combined into Al.Pe – a new raw material from which they make dispensers for loo rolls and handtowels.
