Clean is the new baseline — sustainability is the new expectation

The fact that FM providers deliver clean, safe and healthy environments for their clients is a core expectation. Where they differentiate themselves from each other is in how they deliver those standards.
Concerns about sustainability are driving FM clients to asking more questions. Not just “is the building clean?” but “how are you cleaning the building?” alongside “what are you using in our facilities?” and “what impact will that have?”

Sustainability initiatives and Environmental Social Governance (ESG) commitments are impacting procurement decisions widely across business and public sector environments. For those with multi-site environments particularly so, because impacts very quickly multiply when talking about multiple buildings and facilities. Criteria around sustainable supply choices are appearing in many, if not most, tender documents. They may well be included in FM supplier performance and contractual reviews in future, if not already.

This shift is placing pressure on FM providers to show exactly how they are moving towards more sustainable operations. The claims they make will need to be evidenced through data and transparent processes, and citing credible products and suppliers. Best intentions and broad policy statements are no longer enough! FM clients now require real evidence.

In this context, hygiene and the supplies that enable it aren’t just a function of operations, but a visible part of an organisation’s environmental and social responsibility.

The decisions surrounding hygiene are now of greater importance than ever before.

Everyday hygiene product and supply choices are where sustainability is won or lost.

Sustainability in FM is often shaped by repeated small decisions. This is nowhere more apparent than in the choice of cleaning and hygiene products and how those products are supplied and used.
Consider paper consumption. In high-traffic areas like washrooms the overuse of toilet paper and hand towels is common – something that’s easy to assume is inevitable. But, they result not only in significant waste and extra cost, but also costs of unnecessary maintenance. Using single sheet dispensers for controlled use systems can dramatically reduce usage without spoiling the user experience. Reduced waste and longer intervals between refills in washrooms and kitchens alone will mean a more efficient operation.

The same principle applies to cleaning chemicals. Many organisations still rely on pre-diluted or ready-to-use chemicals, but these mean huge volumes of water being transported around. By moving to concentrated solutions, FM providers can reduce their carbon footprint across the chemicals supply chain at a single step.

Consistency is another key consideration for any large operator – and not just because of purchasing economies. Without standardisation in choices of cleaning chemicals, it’s likely that product use will vary widely between sites and operatives. Overdosing, misuse and unnecessary variation in cleaning chemicals all increase environmental impact. Whereas a colour coded range of super concentrated chemicals alongside controlled dosing systems, will help FM providers ensure that all products are used correctly and efficiently.

These changes are not headline-grabbing or exciting. Collectively, though, they have a measurable impact on waste, emissions and cost. And they are entirely within the control of the FM provider.

Sustainability must work alongside health, safety and performance.

There is a tendency to view sustainability in isolation. In reality, sustainability must coexist with two other equally important priorities: health & safety and cleaning performance.
Cleaning operatives are the first line of defence for effective product use, but they’re also in the firing line when it comes to whether using those products is done safely.

The choice of chemicals, their formulation and the safe handling of those chemicals all have direct consequences for staff safety. Properly sourced products that are low hazard products, clearly labelled, with compliant SDS and proper training are essential in reducing risk. Sustainability should support safer working conditions, not compromise them.

Although chemicals can be diluted, the effectiveness of cleaning can’t. Buildings must remain clean, safe and compliant, no matter what. Regardless of whether you’re cleaning offices, healthcare settings or public spaces, there should be zero tolerance for reduced hygiene and safety standards.

The link between these areas is often just proper process. Even the best products will fail if used incorrectly. Overdosing, improper dilution and poor handling creates both safety risks and unnecessary environmental impact. Consistent training, clear guidance and reliable systems are what bring sustainability, safety and performance together.

It is at this point that FM providers build their credibility. Not through claims, but through their ability to deliver all three – consistently – across every site.

Choose wisely: how your cleaning & hygiene supplier can strengthen your FM offer

We’re really excited to share that Avanti Hygiene is officially a Planet Mark Certified Business—a globally respected symbol of commitment to sustainability.

It’s been a long haul and involved lots of investigation, but we’ve thoroughly enjoyed the process. It involved some careful measurement, lots of reflection and it quickly identified some no-brainer actions we could take.

Becoming Planet Mark Certified means we have taken a big step forwards to support our collective aim for Net Zero at this critical time. Measurement is essential to understand our carbon footprint, and give a basis on which to reduce our impact.

Team Avanti has been looking closely at how we impact the environment from our energy use and carbon emissions to waste and supply chains.

Since we set out on a journey to help create clean, safe and sustainable spaces for all our clients, it made absolute sense to look at our own space too. We help our clients make better choices – so we knew we had to make some too.

What we measured and why it matters

Since last year we have been working with Planet Mark to take a deep dive into our environmental footprint and emission sources. These include our Scopes 1, 2 and some Scope 3 emissions which include Electricity, Natural Gas, Transmission and Distribution Losses, Business Travel, Fleet Travel, Paper, Waste and Water.

Our total measured Location-Based emissions came to 16.2 tonnes of CO2e.

Now we have a benchmark for improvement. That way we can keep on reducing and minimising our impact every year. We’re committed to making a minimum 5% annual reduction to our Scope 1 and 2 emissions in particular, which includes our fleet impact natural gas and electricity usage. Scope 1 emissions are those which a company creates directly, such as using fuel, while Scope 2 means those which are created indirectly, such as through our purchase of electricity.

Planet Mark follows the globally trusted GHG Protocol for reporting. They will keep measuring our carbon footprint each year so we can strive to be a bit better each time.

What it means to us

For us, this achievement is about more than numbers. It’s a reflection of how we’ve rethought who we are and how we work.

We refreshed the Avanti brand a little more than a year back, and adopted our new mission to help create clean, safe and sustainable spaces.

Becoming a Planet Mark Certified Business means that sustainability truly is no longer an ‘extra’ to what we do, but fully built into how we operate. We’ve made huge efforts over the past year to identify suppliers who offer sustainable products, and who operate sustainably. We should all be holding each other to such standards.

From choosing more eco-conscious suppliers to small day-to-day decisions around energy and waste, we’re embedding responsibility into every part of the business. And with this certification, we now have a clear framework for keeping ourselves accountable and making measurable improvements across the board.

Coping with the 3 safety-critical cleaning & hygiene challenge areas for UK food manufacturing

It has, arguably, never been as critical to maintain stringent cleaning, hygiene and associated safety standards in UK food manufacturing.  While the essentials of food production hygiene have not changed, several factors have heightened the focus on how food manufacturing and management facilities, people and production are kept clean and safe.

Keeping facilities hygienically clean

The pandemic brought the issue of infection control firmly front of mind for business and safety inspectors alike. There is an inextricable connection between people and production hygiene. Hand hygiene, the potential for person-to-person transmission, and the surface survival of viral agents without appropriate cleansing were something everyone became increasingly aware of with COVID. As we write this in late 2024, H1N1 is already a known challenge, the spectre of H5N5 lurks in the poultry supply chain driving UK chicken culling, and government is preparing 5M doses of H5N1 bird flu vaccines.

When it comes to assuring absolute cleanliness and hygiene in your food production facility, this is no time to take chances or cut corners.

Protecting and educating people

People are one of the major vectors not just for viral transmission but also bacterial – making staff hand hygiene, correct use of protective gear, and hygienic behaviour training absolutely critical. Maintaining training routines, and sustaining standards are a challenge in a sector which is grappling with significant workforce recruitment and retention challenges, characterised by high turnover rates and difficulties in attracting workers. Post-Brexit immigration policies have restricted the flow of EU labour, and many non-British workers returned home in the wake of the pandemic. This is only intensified by an ageing workforce and emerging reluctance of some young people to enter employment.

It is becoming a true strategic challenge to ensure everyone in production places are trained in how to work safely, as well as equipped to do so.

Ensuring production lines and equipment are safe

Production equipment and environments must be continually kept hygienically clean, which means a laserlike focus on avoiding cross-contamination of all kinds. Effective cleaning systems and routines are essential for every surface and every piece of equipment – which itself can be a source of cross-contact hygiene issues if not scrupulously clean. The correct chemicals for every surface and purpose matters, as does the correct use of those chemicals.

Of growing concern are allergen controls and effective cleaning to remove allergen residues or cross-contact across product lines are vital. This is to reduce any risk to consumers – but also to the business. The impact of an allergen issue can have devastating impacts on a food brand or food retailer’s reputation.

Avanti joins in support of Period Dignity in the Workplace

Grace & Green products are now available for customers  

There’s something wonderful about finding a sustainable, responsible and determined supplier on your doorstep – and that’s what has happened to Avanti with Bristol-based Grace & Green.  

If ever a company really needed to exist to help tackle a problem, this is it.  

More than 72% of the UK female population work – that’s more than 16 million people!  The proportion who menstruate is significant, and so they have employers who really should sit up and listen on this issue.  

While a lot of people talk about inclusivity, this is one aspect that is too often forgotten.  

Sectors which need to take action include health and social care, wholesale and retail trade, and education. Which to us means every hospital, care home, shop and school at the very least ought to be providing free period products for staff and who need them.  

Having periods really isn’t sustainable, is it?

In part, it’s about sustainability. Most period products are 90% plastic.  It doesn’t take a genius to work out that this is a lot of plastic waste that we should be working to reduce, if at all possible.  In the UK, the average person who menstruates is inadvertently responsible for the equivalent of 3876 plastic bags in terms of the volume of plastic waste – and there are toxin issues, too.  

Grace & Green are the highest scoring B Corp within disposable period care in the world – their products are 100% certified organic, biodegradable, free from chlorine bleaches, pesticides and other synthetic materials and toxin-free. 

The other problem is far more personal and human. And it comes down to dignity. According to Water Aid research, 85% of those who menstruate feel anxiety or stress about managing their period at work. Every month. Year in, year out, for many years.  

While employers talk much about stress and honestly want to reduce negative forms, the reality is that most have never even thought about this particular source.

Time for Period Dignity in every workplace

Active Lifestyle Centres provides fitness and leisure services across the UK and knows the importance of rigorous leisure centre – especially post pandemic!  They are acutely aware of their carbon footprint and responsibility as a business too.  So their Yate Centre partnered with Avanti to seek improvements.

The collaboration with Avanti led to the implementation of innovative and more sustainable cleaning solutions across five South Gloucestershire Centres. These not only met these goals but lowered chemical usage, and also resulted in annual savings of more than £25,000. They aren’t done yet – the next focus is on toilet paper and handtowels, which offer potential for more savings and sustainability benefits.

High concentrate chemicals created cleaning efficiencies

Adam Cooper, Centre Manager at the Yate site, highlighted how Avanti’s high-concentrate chemicals enabled them to save through bulk purchasing but cut down on storage space. “We now use high-concentrate chemicals, reducing plastic waste and ensuring precise usage,” said Adam. This change also brought safety benefits: a less slippery residue minimised slip risks in the wet areas such as poolside.

Fewer cleaning chemicals reduced environmental impact

Reducing their chemical list from 50 to about 12 across their five regional sites cut down on the Group’s chemical impact to the environment. “We’ve reduced our chemical list thanks to Avanti’s concentrated products, which not only cuts costs but also reduces our environmental footprint” Adam commented.

Extraordinary savings from sustainable cleaning swaps

Avanti helped Adam unlock some pretty stunning savings overall for the five Active Lifestyle Centres – and they come from what seem such simple sustainable leisure centre cleaning swaps. “By switching to single-feed paper in our gyms, we saved around £20,000 annually, while using high-concentrate sanitisers reduced our costs from £1,160 to just £68 a year,” Adam shared. Overall, the group has saved over £25,000 annually – that’s really significant for this business, which is backed by a non-profit organisation.”

Partnership and the Prospects for Paper

Adam praised the seamless collaboration he enjoys – saying that the team is both responsive and reliable. Now, the focus is on paper – toilet paper, to be exact.  It offers ways to reduce paper use, as well as introduce more recycled paper in the first place. “Our journey with Avanti continues. We’re now focusing on optimising our toilet paper usage, aiming for further savings and efficiency,” he concluded.

Seeking out supplier sustainability: Helping Avanti customers join the circular economy by recycling paper hand towels

We always explore their green credentials in depth. It’s wonderful to find suppliers, who are truly walking the walk on sustainability – as well as providing us with products that are better for the planet.

We are delighted to highlight Essity, the company behind the ubiquitous washroom supplies brand Tork, as an exemplar of circularity.

We often don’t consider what happens next when we discard a hand towel after drying our hands in a washroom. Tork believes that we should – or, at least, that those who provide the washrooms themselves should!

World’s first washroom circularity programme - supplier sustainability in action!

The innovative Tork PaperCircle initiative is truly ground breaking. It is the first recycling service for paper hand towels.

Tork PaperCircle is designed to help businesses reduce waste and carbon footprint by collecting and recycling used paper hand towels into new tissue products.

This initiative not only promotes environmental responsibility but can help companies meet their sustainability targets.

According to Tork, a building with 800 people can potentially reduce emissions by a huge 190 kg of CO2 per month if they join this programme – that’s an estimated carbon footprint reduction of 40%.

The collection and recycling process is proven and reliable. They arrange collections, and transport the waste to Essity’s local mills. There, it can be processed and recycled into new products, ready to ship out to distributors and resellers like Avanti.

It not only reduces an area of waste that is usually unnoticed, but also closes the circular ‘loop’ so that less virgin wood fibre pulp is required for manufacturing.
